| The
artist describes her work in her autobiography (details)
:
"Perhaps
it is because of my enthusiasm for narrative and illustration
that I like to choose subjects in a series. Rarely do I feel inspired
by an isolated theme, but a string of related pictures forms more
easily in my fancy. I like the stories such a series tell, and
the contrasts between one related subject and the rest."
"I have
always loved the European Spring, Summer Autumn and Winter, and
I missed them more than any other aspect of life when living in
the all-dry, all-wet climate of India. It seems to me that men
and women are at their most comfortable and creative when their
lives flow with the seasons of the year. I have always enjoyed
making pictures of plants, and including them in larger, more
complicated paintings. Painting leaves and flowers is a therapeutic
occupation; you have your model in front of you and it does not
move."
"I think
I was working at my peak in 1987 and I would cite the paintings
of the Months of the Year as one of the two best examples
of my work."
